I’ve been reading comics with Deadpool in them since the day the character was created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza and debuted in New Mutants 98 back in 1991. However, it took some time before I actually became a fan of the character. As it stands now, I love the Merc with a Mouth and religiously read his books when they come out. So, needless to say, I was a little excited when I saw the test footage for the movie and then proceeded to lose my shit when the film was given a green light. I ended up losing even more shit when the first Red Band trailer was released and the remnants of whatever shit I have left was completely obliterated when I finally got to see Deadpool in the theater.
20th Century Fox The wait was soooo worth it! |
Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a smart-assed mercenary just trying to make a living and finding love with an equally disturbed woman named Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) but when the news is given that he has terminal cancer, he seeks out an alternative source of treatment. A mysterious gentleman offers him a chance for a procedure that will turn him into a superhero but what he finds is torture from a mutant named Ajax (Ed Skrein) and his henchman Angel Dust (Gina Carano). The torture awakens Wilson’s mutant healing ability but leaves him looking horrifying. Wilson, obsessed with revenge, dons a red suit and renames himself Deadpool—however, the X-Men Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) aren’t going to let him go on a wild killing spree and join him to try and bring the men who ruined his life to justice.
20th Century Fox Also, Gina Carano sports a very strange hair style. |
Deadpool getting his own movie is a big deal in the world of comic book adaptations for several reasons. The biggest one of them is the redemption that will be delivered to the character after the severe mistreatment he underwent in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (where he was still played by Reynolds). Another reason is the fact this marks the first time since Punisher: War Zone back in 2008 (yes, I know that’s not too long ago) that a Marvel property got an R-rated movie treatment. Judging by the reviews and the money the film is making, taking the very real potential risk of losing money due to its rating (mass audiences aren’t made entirely of people over 18, folks) ended up being a winning gamble for Fox. Finally, the character is extremely popular right now (go to your local comic shop and just look at how many freaking books he’s currently starring in) and releasing a film that gets the character right is a major deal.
20th Century Fox Never forget. |
To sum up my feelings on Deadpool at the very beginning of this review, I fucking loved this film! (Oh yes, this will be a vulgar review filled with male nudity and swearing…just like the movie. In case you’re wondering, the male nudity comes from the fact I’m typing this naked. So, unless you’re stalking me, you’re realistically not going to see the male nudity that comes with the review and, if you do, that’ll cost you extra.) One of the strongest things this film does is so accurately get the character of Deadpool right. It’s clear that not only do the writers love the character as they fill the film with dialogue that feels ripped from the pages and his tendency to break the fourth wall—gawd, it is so awesome having Reynolds talk directly to the audience as DP—but it’s clear that Reynolds is also a huge fan as he so perfectly encapsulates the essence of the merc. Like all adaptations, there are some changes from the source material (like tweaks to his origin and the changing of Negasonic’s powers) but, like all the working adaptations, it is, at its core, similar enough that you feel like you are watching the character make the leap from the pages to the screen.
20th Century Fox Pretty much from now on I'm going to hear Reynolds' voice when I read my DP books. |
From start to finish, this film is a gory, swear-filled fun fest filled with gut-busting humor, ridiculously over-the-top and amazing action and excellent performances from the entire cast. Whether it’s the hysterical scenes with T.J. Miller as Wade’s friend Weasel or the back and forth between Colossus and Deadpool, every moment is a non-stop thrill ride of excess and insanity. Hell, even when the film gets touching—and it does get touching—I never felt like I was being robbed of Deadpool’s quips or his love of violence and depravity. Additionally, the way this film utilized music—both in the form of pop hits like DMX’s “X Gon Give It to Ya” or Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” and in the form of its score—was done exceptionally to create atmosphere, enhance action and for absolutely fantastic comedic moments.
20th Century Fox I honestly never thought I would see Negasonic Teenage Warhead in a live-action film...ever. |
The cast are all fantastic in the film as you not only have Ryan Reynolds being the perfect man to play Deadpool but he’s backed up with an excellent group of people all nailing their roles. I’ve never been her biggest fan of her acting but, I gotta say, Gina Carano really impressed me as Angel Dust. I also really enjoyed both Morena Baccarin and Brianna Hildebrand in their roles as Vanessa and Negasonic Teenage Warhead respectively. T.J. Miller is his usual hilarious self and Ed Skrein is really, really, really good as Ajax. He rode that perfect line of being a villain that you love to hate but never hated so much that you don’t want to see him at all in the story. Finally, my hats off to the three men (and the special effects crew) that brought Colossus to life. I’m not one to get all fan-boy-y and whine about the details in the translation but it was really cool to see an actually Russian Colossus.
20th Century Fox And the best part is he isn't wearing his stupid old costume! |
The only complaint I really had about the film was with the flashbacks. The film has a central story of DP finding Ajax in order to make him pay and his origin is told through a series of flashbacks during an absolutely epic action scene. For the most part, this works well and kept me wanting to see more action and clever/ridiculous one-liners but there are times the flashbacks are too long and I started to think that maybe the story would continue from this point and we’d work our way back to where the flashback began. Ultimately, the story would stop the flashback and go back to the action sequence but this complaint is very, very, very minor and was only a little bit distracting because, in the end, the film is stupidly entertaining.
20th Century Fox It looks like Ajax brought axes to a sword fight...which, actually, isn't that bad of an idea when you think about it. |
While it’s clear that I will never suffer from superhero over-saturation with my entertainment, Deadpool was a refreshing smell of delicious chimichangas because it showed that not only is there some of Marvel’s properties that Fox actually gives a damn about (as long as there isn’t such characters as The Thing, Human Torch, The Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic involved) but that R-rated superhero anti-hero films can work, work well and be profitable (as long as it is appropriate to the property. Don't do something stupid, Fox, and think that you can make all your Marvel properties R-rated because this one worked. Others might not.) With its intense action, even more intense language, wicked special effects in bringing Colossus to life, excellent choices in music and a tremendous cast, Deadpool ended up being an all-around fun film filled with nonsense, depravity and adult humor.
