The Attacks of 26/11 is that rare exception. The plot and the end of this movie are no secret because the 2008 terrorist attacks on Mumbai, and the way the horror unfolded on the night of November 26, is still fresh in public memory. Unfortunately, in the hands of director Ramgopal Varma, these unprecedented events are portrayed in a one-dimensional, jingoistic, and almost hysterical tone. The Attacks of 26/11 often resembles a tacky B-movie. The Attacks Of 26/11 needlessly builds the Commissioner’s role into a larger-than-life one, and therein it slips. I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five for Ramgopal Varma’s The Attacks Of 26/11. It’s a chapter in Mumbai’s history that we’ll never forget, so a movie on the attacks should have left you more than just comfortably numb.

THE ATTACKS OF 26/11 makes you salute and respect the men in uniform, who fought the terrorists tooth and nail. That's precisely why THE ATTACKS OF 26/11 triumphs as a feature film. The gimmicky camera angles are not there this time, since RGV goes about passionately reliving the horrific tale as it is. In fact, it won't be erroneous to state that THE ATTACKS OF 26/11 rediscovers RGV, who bounces back with renewed enthusiasm. On the whole, THE ATTACKS OF 26/11 is akin to watching the barbaric act in rawest form. The film not only chronicles the terror attacks, but also pays homage to the sentiments of the people of India and especially the heroes and victims of 26/11. A powerful retelling of a regrettable event in history. Do not miss this one!

The good news is that The Attacks of 26/11 is one of the better films Ram Gopal Varma has made in recent years. The bad news is that Varma's last few films were duds like Department and Bhoot Returns so the bar is set very low. In a few places, The Attacks of 26/11 is startling. The tragic absurdity of constables fighting heavily armed terrorists with stones and lathis hits you.But mostly, the film is plodding. Varma insists on bludgeoning background music and the terrorists remain faceless caricatures.Even Ajmal Kasab, who is the only one fleshed out to some extent, is sketchy and simplistic. The Attacks of 26/11 is a powerful subject watered down by ineffective story-telling. This could have and should have been so much more.

It's evidently researched; yet, we're left as observers, watching the rampage rip the soul of the city. While the thought is poignant, the horror isn't palpable throughout and the execution doesn't cut as deep as the actual tragedy. No hard steel of emotion ripping into your gut stemming from cinematic brilliance. With real facts, figures and even flaws, such is the subject that it shocks, pains and stuns you into silence even now. What RGV's re-appraisal of that injury does, is remind us that the spirit of the city is indefatigable; inspite of still bleeding hearts.

Varma’s version of 26/11 was truly more gory than even the real events that occurred in Mumbai  in 2008. Blood spurting out of people’s chests like fountains. Wounded victims falling dramatically into brass pots filled with marigolds as laughing Buddhas looked on benignly. Etc etc etc. Ad nauseaum, Mr Varma, you had such a large canvas to play out this story on. Could you not have done it more sensitively? Sure 26/11 was a bloody-curdling, horrific chapter in Mumbai’s history. But surely not as blood-curdling and horrific as your film? You were not making a horror film. You were making a film about real lives. Will Varma’s film work with Mumbai audiences? As sad as this film has made me, for simply not portraying what really happened on those terrible three days in Mumbai.

This film is an act of obvious courage and, in following through with it at the risk of treading on raw wounds, Ram Gopal Varma presents a precise account of what happened on the night India’s financial capital froze amid an unprecedented carnage. So, is The Attacks of 26/11 recompense enough for the unpleasant shocks that Ram Gopal Varma has subjected moviegoers to of late? Flashes of the old are indeed visible in parts of the film. And that is evidence that all isn’t lost. Ram Gopal Varma is still not back to his best and The Attacks of 26/11 isn’t an unqualified triumph. But it is certainly watchable.

Its initial passages are promising, and in a few sequences, there is an effective build-up to the dread. But Varma loses the advantage by slipping into familiar treads. People being killed, and limbs being turned into bloody colanders on screen need to be treated, in this kind of a film which demands respect because it claims veracity, with respect. Here the director sheds restraint, and becomes a voyeur, and turns us into voyeurs too. It had the potential to be both smart procedural, and spiffy action, but '26/11' sinks somewhere in the middle.

Unfortunately, The Attacks of 26/11 ends up being a confused piece of work that has neither the well researched methodology of a documentary nor the dramatics of a feature film. The Attacks of 26/11 feels like a over decorated half baked dish that has the right ingredients and toppings but lacks the taste to titillate your appetite.

What’s Good: The cinematography, the lucid flow of the narration, all performances. What’s Bad: The style of narration suits the news-mode more than the movie-mode. Loo break: None. Watch or Not?: For reliving the intensity of the attacks and this well retold narration, boasting of power packed performances by all, especially Nana Patekar, this one is definitely worth a watch.

The film helps one understand the complete crumbling of intelligence and the state of our policemen on beat, most with just laathis. One scene at the Leopold Cafe highlights this with two cops lobbing stones into the cafe after the terrorists have moved on. They have just their laathis with them. A stark display of how unarmed and vulnerable our policemen are. RGV and Eros International should dub this film in as many languages as possible. Methinks it should have an international release. Welcome back, RGV!

‘The Attacks of 26/11’, a film by Ram Gopal Varma, recreates the terrifying events on celluloid. The filmmaker has categorically said that the film is a tribute to the incident and rightly so, for he has been able to sensibly weave sentiments attached to the event. The movie superbly throws light on the many aspects of terrorism in a mature and moving way. The film highlights how the ulterior motive of the terrorists is self-centred, their philosophy is hypocritical and how no one can escape the deadly paws of terrorism. It is a film that is completely performance driven. After a string of flops, for RGV (who had earlier delivered successful films like ‘Satya’, ‘Company’) this is a comeback of sorts.
