It’s very hard to describe Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale as anything other than a mixed cuisine buffet, given that it tries to offer a little bit of everything to please just about everyone. The real problem with Dilwale is the sheer artificiality of the enterprise. From the rainbow-hued sets and the touched-up landscapes in the Gerua song, to many moments of comedic and emotional payoff, so much of it just feels fake.

DILWALE is similar to CHENNAI EXPRESS in several ways. Rohit Shetty focuses on the love story yet again, while the light moments, high-octane drama and aimed-at-masses dialogue -- the staple ingredients or fodder that contribute to a masalathon -- adorn the goings-on wonderfully. On the whole, DILWALE is akin to a mouthwatering meal that satiates the craving of those who relish masalathons, besides being an absolute treat for SRK-Kajol fans. An unadulterated crowd-pleaser, DILWALE delivers what you expect from a Rohit Shetty film: King-sized entertainment. Go for it!

On the whole, Dilwale is a masala entertainer from the start till the end. It will do good business at the box-office, mainly on the strength of the support of the youth and the masses. Distributors, many of who have acquired the film at unbelievably high prices, will scrape through. As for the producers, this one is a lottery – sorry, windfall! Yes, the producers may make a net profit of Rs. 80-100 crore in this film!!

To put it simply, Dilwale is a bizarre love story. SRK has done his share of bizarre love stories in his time, but this one just doesn’t get off the ground despite the superstar’s best efforts. There is more hate and distrust in Dilwale than love. No amount of good-natured clowning and old school romance can save it from sinking into a deep pit a patchiness. Watch it for Kajol and, to a lesser extent, for SRK. The rest of the actors on this vehicle, barring Varun Sharma on an occasion or two, are mere passengers.

Rohit Shetty's films are big-ticket adventures; a genre unto themselves. Low on content — plot lines borrowed (in this case Hum and Kasme Vaade), incohesive screenplay and lowbrow dialogues (Sajid-Farhad) — the film leans heavily on Shah Rukh's mega-stardom, Varun's effervescence, breathtaking locales (Iceland and Bulgaria), orchestrated car chases and over-the-top situations, which have you chuckling.

There’s nothing new in ‘Dilwale’, which steals moments not just from Rohit Shetty’s ‘Golmaal’ films, but also from Hollywood rom com ‘Love Actually’. But ‘Dilwale’, on the whole, is a plotless drag : the slaphappy antics you see on screen are a random jumble of light, camera, action, done in the broadest sense. When old hands SRK and Kajol look into each other’s eyes, they can still make you feel it, except it doesn’t happen enough. Not by a long shot.

Even the car stunts -- something Shetty is known for -- are unoriginal, coming to us from Goldeneye and The Fast And The Furious movies, and so Dilwale, which, in its convoluted, sloppy fashion, tries to pay homage to Mukul Anand's Hum -- a highly compelling action melodrama -- was always going to be an uphill climb. What we end up with barely gets off the ground. Ho-Hum.

Varun Dhawan is endearing and sincere as ever. Kriti gives good support. But then the younger couple, or for that matter everything else, fades into the background when SRK and Kajol look into each other's eyes. Even if you are not a Rohit Shetty fan, watch this for the chemistry between SRK and Kajol which refuses to simmer down even after all these years.

The film never promised to be a cerebral pleaser hence, if you go with the flow, you may even enjoy it. It shifts gears between action, romance and comedy and guess what all three have in common? Cars! For those who love to sit back and enjoy movies, this one could entertain you. I couldn’t thoroughly enjoy the film because of its highly predictable storyline. Although for all Rohit Shetty fans, this is another out and out commercial film that they would enjoy.

It is a perfect concoction of romance, action and comedy that Hindi film viewers generally look forward to. Even though it does not have the engaging storyline of Om Shanti Om, it is just about as, or even more entertaining, than Happy New Year. If entertainment is why you go to the theatres, then Dilwale will not disappoint you. The ending, however, is likely to receive applause only from the die-hard SRK fans. In all, it is a great family film with a comical spin on the timeless, Romeo-Julietesque love stories. Watch Dilwale, you won’t regret!

Let me put a harsh truth out there first: Dilwale would have fallen flat on its face if it did not have Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan as its lead actors. It’s the kind of romantic drama that draws heavily on these two stars and their unrivalled on-screen chemistry. It’s the kind of entertainer where the story is an afterthought. And that’s a good thing. For every romantic song shot in picturesque locales, there was a car explosion that blew your mind away. Watch this only if you have a thing for watching Kajol and Khan on the silver screen.

Rohit Shetty’s movie is part ‘Baazigar’, part ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum’, and loaded with ammunition and car chases. It could’ve possibly worked, but diluting vintage romance with Rohit’s style of pulp fiction reduces the effort to nothing short of painful. So, when the couple isn’t talking love or singing in exotic locations, they are busy pumping bullets, indulging in car chases and watching cars being blown up without any apparent reason. It’s a life that’s dangerously fun, or foolish.
