Watching the film earlier this week, a whole year after I’d last watched it, the violence still felt stomach churning, and I still came away impressed by the unexpected moments of humor that Behl had managed to sneak into this intense drama. Titli is relentlessly grim and yet unmistakably powerful and moving. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea – it’s especially not for the squeamish – but it’s an unflinching study of family in the way that the movies rarely provide.I’m going with four out of five for Titli. Brace yourself, you will be rewarded.

Titli does very boldly to eschew both comedy and style for a more arid approach, but the narrative rationale is flimsy. Titli offers up dry nakedness as if that is enough to impress. In many a scene it is -- and, don’t get me wrong, this is a stirringly solid directorial debut -- but in many a scene it feels too intentionally underdone.

Right from the opening scene, Titli snatches you from the safe and secure confines of your home and drops you amidst the violent chaos, caused by the crime inflicting dysfunctional family. Titli is not for the faint-hearted as it not only introduces you but makes you feel a part of the family that gives you the creeps.

Kanu Behl’s Titli is the most impressive film of this year so far. Its tryst with reality will keep you hooked till the end, to say the least. Titli is the latest gem from evolving Indian cinema. Don’t even think of missing it.

Titli is not an easy film to watch. It hits you in the guts and spills out blood.Whether Titli, the reluctant brother, transforms into a butterfly and flies away or not, there is certainly no escaping from Behl’s non-apologetic, brutal and bloody tale.

What you mainly take away from this film is that Behl, even when showing you the mirror to a harsh reality sans any filter, in a strange paradoxical way, tells us how hope and instinct for survival can exist even in the face of dead ends. One scene where Titli is convincing his bride, Neelu (Shivani Raghuvanshi), to let him break her bones is undoubtedly chilling to the bone, but after the initial fear and disgust, you feel a surge of admiration for the strength and passion that Neelu exhibits as she deals with this trying situation in the most matter of fact, resigned manner.

The real find of Titli is Shivani Raghuvanshi. In a male-dominated cast, she provides the spark that injects a degree of tangible humanity into the dystopian drama.Even when she is at the receiving end of grave threats and attacks, her visage reflects serene firmness. In a film in which nobody smiles, Raghuvanshi’s character embodies the sole ray of hope and the debutante makes no false moves. The same is true of the film as a whole. Titli is an unflinching, insightful chronicle of our times. Do not miss it.

You watch, with mounting horror, your heart in your mouth. You watch, because you cannot look away. You end up feeling for Titli. You want him to break free, and fly away. He shines, and despite its darkness, so does the film. It is harrowing but imperative viewing.

Titli works because it is not just a poignant character study of an angry young man but also an incisive and intense family drama.

The film goes beyond the India Gate-Punjabi cliches that Hindi cinema so easily boxes the Capital in. Titli shows the underbelly of Delhi you would have perhaps seen in a Ravish Ki Report (Ravish Kumar of NDTV). It's the Delhi of outliers, the Delhi that throbs with life on the margins of reality and on the fringes of filmmakers' imagination.
Movie: Titli
Synopsis: In the badlands of Delhi's dystopic underbelly, Titli, the youngest member of a violent car-jacking brotherhood, plots a desperate bid to escape the 'family' business. His struggle to do so is countered at each stage by his indignant brothers, who finally try marrying him off to 'settle' him. Titli, finds an unlikely ally in his new wife, caught though she is in her own web of warped reality and dysfunctional dreams. They form a strange, beneficial partnership, only to confront their inability to escape the bindings of their family roots. But, is escape the same as freedom?
