Alternately wry, witty, persuasive and shocking, Talvar evokes feelings of fear, anger and shame as you consider the likelihood that a pair of innocent parents are serving life terms for a crime they may have had no hand in. Deliberately unsentimental and melodrama-free, the film goes about its business in docudrama fashion, exposing a flawed legal system, a judgmental society, and an impatient media. I'm going with three-and-a-half out of five. This is essential viewing, if only to understand the world we live in.

‘Talvar’ is a difficult film to watch because we know all along that we are not in some fictitious la-la land; we are in Noida, where the killings took place, and the events that unfold have a distinct ring of reality. The film– part police procedural, part crime drama– is as real as a constructed-for-the-camera document can be, with its portrayal of the professional rivalries between the investigating teams, and insatiable media persons. Despite its flaws, ‘Talvar’, which rhymes so closely with ‘Talwar’, is a brave film that devastates.

Talvar is a pro-Talwar film. There is a very subtle undertone to the narrative that paints Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, parents of Aarushi who have been convicted in the double murder case, as victims of insensitive investigators and the judicial system in our country. Talvar is an intriguing and gripping thriller and boasts of brilliant performances, witty dialogues and much more. You should definitely not miss this one.

All said and done, there are those moments where the pace of the largely-gripping narrative slackens. The numerous POVs and the actors playing the same sequences, again, gives the viewer a sense of deja vu. Meghna Gulzar's Talvar is a disturbing revisiting of the Aarushi-Hemraj murders, one that might just see the public memory digging the remnants of the case out from the depths of oblivion. In all, Talvar needs to be watched, for its performances among other things.

Talvar's compared to Rashomon but while that wandered through forests of fantasy, Talvar boldly tackles reality. It offers totally different takes on two murders. But it is unambiguous about a third - fairness, slashed to pieces by incompetence and callous crassness. In wiping away stains from the sword of justice, Talvar shines.

The advantage of working with Bhardwaj (he is also one of the film's producers) is that he can contribute his multi-faceted talents to the project. So as expected, Talvar's music is composed by Bhardwaj adding to the dark texture of the film. And as a package deal we also get to hear Rekha Bhardwaj's rich melodious voice singing the film's closing song Zinda.

One of the high points of Talvar is a long climactic sequence in which two investigating teams sit across a table and have a go at each other as they strive, with no holds barred, to get their respective points across. The free-for-all sums up the depths of absurdity that matters can sink to when the truth has many faces. No matter which of the faces of truth the audience takes away from the film, its importance as a mirror of our times is unlikely to diminish in any way.Talvar is a must watch.

One believes that the laws that govern our land are competent if not entirely snag-free. But Meghana Gulazar's Talvar subliminally suggests that while the system provides a framework for doling out justice, its construct can sometimes be a contraint. As a dialogue in the film explains, "Gathering information in an investigation is often called a legal act carried out illegally. The trick is to find a balance between what is legally right and what you, as an individual, feel is right.

The film's narrative is superlatively gripping and keeps the audiences glued to the edge of their seats till the end. While the first half of the film is outstanding and tight, the second half slows down after the interval, but picks up towards the end, thus making for a thoroughly engaging film till the end. On the whole, TALVAR is an engaging, edgy thriller with no dull moments. A must watch.
