Nikhil Advani’s remake of Ghai’s film, also titled Hero, stays faithful to the original blueprint…but faithful to a fault. Intended as a launch pad to showcase the potential of star-sprogs Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty, the new film is so steeped in 1980s naiveté and old-fashioned melodrama that it fast becomes a slog. This is lazy, indifferent filmmaking, and a colossal bore for most of its running time. A video featuring Salman Khan singing the terrific title track at the end is too little too late. I’m going with two out of five.

With excellent production values, Nikhil Advani's film, though technically advanced, is poorly executed in terms of writing. The characters, without much thought given into their background stories, are shallow and underdeveloped. The screenplay is ridiculously flawed and confusing at times. While most of the scenes are superbly dramatic, they unfortunately do not create an emotional impact. Overall, this Hero is below mediocre fare except for the lead pair's straightforward performances.

This stale story is transported to 2015 for reasons best known to the filmmakers. If you are giving us a brand new pair, what is to stop you from giving us a brand new plot? And if you do have to remake that 80s show, why can’t you do a better job? The end brings relief, with Sallu Bhai working the end credits, exuding more star power in two minutes than we’ve seen in two hours. This ‘Hero’ is a zero.

Hero isn’t set in 1983 and the original’s ‘top cop’s daughter falls for a golden-hearted crook’ narrative has long bitten dust. Unsurprisingly, this struggle to fit a modern-day romance in a dated template prompts a patchy, wobbly, bizarre, humourless drama proving an uphill task for two rank newcomers to tackle.

Sculpted as a full throttle masala entertainer, Hero is plot-heavy. And while you are well acquainted with the story, Nikhil and Salman's sensibility works as midas touch, giving the film a different texture. It is slick and never allows its viewers to feel restless. For its 132 minutes' crisp runtime, Hero offers bucketful of entertainment and victoriously conveys that commercial movies needn't be puerile to show people a good time.

Nikhil Advani had a hit story, a fresh young pair of actors at his disposal and he unfortunately chose the safe route of the same old, with all the commercial trappings intact. Clearly not much thought is put into the screenplay. A shallow screenplay and a rather convoluted story flouting logic work against the film.

Nikhil Advani's HERO has been aggressively marketed and no corners have been cut to ensure that the promotions reach all across. If only the same amount of passion was invested in writing a nice dramatic entertainer. All the hype may result in a somewhat decent start at the box office, but the word of mouth isn't going to be flattering at all. On the whole, HERO fails the litmus test of rehashing a classic for the Generation Next. It appeals in very small measures and is not an ideal weekend entertainer. If you a die-hard Salman Khan fan, you may want to patronise, else avoid.

It's difficult to say what debutants Pancholi and Shetty are capable of because Advani's remake of Subhash Ghai's Hero starts off as awful and ends as boring. Hero is a '90s' film that should never have been taken out of the vault.Hero is ill-conceived, outdated and lazily made, with neither director nor crew giving a hoot for details like continuity or logic. On the plus side, things can only look up for Pancholi and Shetty after this, because it's going to be tough to find a project as forgettable as Hero.

Watching Hero is like refreshing your Facebook timeline, hoping for a like or a comment. Except nothing happens. The movie moves from one bizarre scene to the other making you realize that those Candy Crush invites are NOT the most irritating thing in the world. .Bad writing, poor direction and average performances make Hero forgettable. Hope Nikhil Advani redeems himself next weekend with Katti Batti!!

Hero is a complete throwback of the ‘Ek Gunda Ek IG Ki Beti Se Kaise Pyaar Kar Sakta Hai’ era. Nikhil Advani misses out on presenting a completely entertaining plot. All the elements seem scattered and hence there is neither enough romance nor action nor drama. The screenplay is a little hotchpotch and that is what affects the film badly.
