Bombay Velvet doesn’t have the raw energy or the unforgettable characters of Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur. It’s never as involving a story as Black Friday. And yet what you cannot deny is the sheer craft that Kashyap brings to the enterprise. The missing piece of the puzzle, sadly, is the inconsistent script…one that never lets us truly care for the characters, one that leaves too many questions unanswered.I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Bombay Velvet. Much of the film dazzles, but I found myself longing for some soul.

Bombay Velvet runs out of breath less than halfway through, and huffs and puffs as it tries to breast the finish line. The new film clearly wants to be many things -- noir, grand romance, a Broadwayesque musical, Prakash Mehra, Brian De Palma -- but ends up indecisively skulking around the shadows of giant films, despite editing goddess Thelma Schoonmaker blessing it with her scissors.

On the whole, Bombay Velvet is a colossal waste of money and resources. It is devoid of entertainment value and will, therefore, fail miserably at the box office. There is nothing velvet-like about it. Rather, it is as coarse as unprocessed jute.

Bombay Velvet has rough edges too. The film is so intensely stylized, it misses emotional pull. Certain sequences - like Johnny's prize-fighting - feel stretched. .Its cinematography and performances, particularly Ranbir's edgy 'big shot', merit an extra half-star. But while Bombay Velvet is stylish, this fabric could have been smoother.

It certainly isn’t disgust that you feel at how Bombay Velvet turns out. It is after all a deftly mounted film with much going for it. What you leave the hall with is a sense of disappointment. Bombay Velvet has neither the softness of velvet nor the sweep of the city it is an ode to. Unlike its pugilist protagonist, the film punches well below its weight.

Lookswise, the film is pure gorgeousness. Trouble is, it is also largely overwrought and inert. The meticulous detailing in the re-creation of one of the most pulsating periods of Bombay’s history, is terrific. Much of the film stays, mostly and disappointingly, on its sumptuous surface.

Ranbir Kapoor is an able actor and he is the backbone of Bombay Velvet. His mannerism, boastful attitude and ruggedness will be remembered for some time. Detailing is Bombay Velvet’s real deal and that makes it a watchable movie. Also, don‘t expect it to be another film on the line of Gangs Of Wasseypur 1 and 2. This time, it’s more about the masses.

'Bombay Velvet' is more like a roller coaster ride, as it takes you on a dizzy high with its charming ambience and music that is bound to stay with you for long, but later you are brought down not so gently with the underwhelming plot and lack of punches. Watch it for the experience. -

Right from the word go, he transports you into an era that makes you believe in whatever you see and hear. Anurag, who has mostly been associated with offbeat cinema, sweeps you off the floor and also your imagination with BOMBAY VELVET. It won't be wrong to say that he has created the film with a right mix of great performances and eye-catching visuals. On the whole, BOMBAY VELVET is a visual masterpiece that is rich in form. If you want to be wowed by the detailing of the 1960s, superb performances of Ranbir Kapoor, Karan Johar and Anushka Sharma, then go ahead and watch this film.

Rather than being its own beast, Bombay Velvet is more a throwback to older, better gangster films by Hollywood legends .There’s a noticeable lack of humour in the film, even though the film’s elements are not dark enough to warrant such seriousness. The film is mainstream and ‘filmi’, so it’s hard to imagine why there is only one joke in the whole movie. However, make of it what you will, but for all its weaknesses, what Bombay Velvet lacks in complexity, it ultimately makes up for with its sheer beauty.

Coming from a director like Kashyap who in the past has developed our taste buds for realistic cinema, his first attempt at a commercial film seems too cliched. Settling for filmy story, what ruins this film is a botched up second half. Post-interval, the film loses its hold as the plot weakens.

The first half is engaging as Kashyap draws you into Johnny, Rosie and Kaizad’s world. The second half isn’t as tightly knit as the first as their lives unravel at a frenetic and confused pace. Bombay Velvet makes for a good one-time watch primarily due to good performances from its lead actors and a reminder of a forgotten era.
