Any Body Can Dance Movie Review

Ratings:2/5  ABCD Review By: Rajeev Masand  Site: CNN IBN (IBNLive)
'ABCD', an acronym for Any Body Can Dance, should have been more fun than it is, given that it's a true-blue 3D dance movie packed with energetic musical set-pieces. But the film suffers from the same malady that plagues this genre everywhere. Like the "Step Up" movies from which it's evidently inspired, "ABCD" has a threadbare, predictable plot, and a cast of professional dancers who can break into gravity-defying moves but can't deliver a line of dialogue convincingly. At 2 hours and 20 minutes, 'ABCD' is too long. There's some genuinely original choreography up there, but it's lost in a plodding film with characters you couldn't care about. I'm going with a generous two out of five for 'ABCD'. Even if it's true what this film claims - that anybody can dance, it also provides evidence that the same is not true of acting!

Ratings:3/5  ABCD Review By: Taran Adarsh  Site: BollywoodHungama
ABCD - ANY BODY CAN DANCE's biggest strength lies in the variety of dances that Remo presents to the spectators. Where the film falters is in its skeletal plotline, although writer Tushar Hiranandani comes up with several knockout sequences. But there's no denying that the screenwriting deviates into the conventional and foreseeable zone in the second hour.  Besides, the film is stretched by at least 15/20 minutes. Thankfully, the narrative gathers steam once again towards the closing portions and the dance competition in the finale is simply breathtaking. On the whole, ABCD - ANY BODY CAN DANCE has some incredible, eye-popping dances as its soul. While the template may be conventional -- the triumph of the underdog -- the film has its share of moments that stay with you, especially the concluding portions of the film. Decent watch

Ratings:2.5/5  Review By: Anupama Chopra  Site:Star World (Hindustan Times)
The first half of ABCD is mystifyingly dull. Dance films inevitably have predictable plots but here the problem is compounded by uniformly weak performances. Remo has selected dancers rather than actors. Their bodies can do incredible contortions but their faces barely register expressions. The amateurish writing doesn’t help either – as a result, no one makes much of an impression. The best thing about ABCD: Any Body Can Dance is that it’s earnest but this film could have been so much more. I’m going with two and a half stars.

With India's first 3D Dance film, Remo puts his best foot forward. The film lacks dramatic-density, but the minute dance breaks in, all hell breaks loose. This isn't a 'step-up' from anything you've seen before. The 3D impresses in parts with predictable routines, but he pitches the emotional tempo towards the end. The grand finale act is spectacular, better than all reality shows strung together. This movie isn't about the A-to-Z of dance; but if there's rhythm in your body this one will move you. To the nearest floor.

To put it simply, ABCD or Any Body Can Dance, written and directed by choreographer Remo D'Souza is entertainment, entertainment and entertainment.Technically and production-wise, ABCD, howsoever the title may sound silly, punches you hard. Niftily edited dance sequences, a chase that is a mix of dancing and eye-popping jumps, make ABCD the Dabangg of dancing. ABCD tugs at your emotional cords all the way as Prabhu Deva (Vishnu Sir) tries to convert a bunch of street ruffians into champions. But all said and done the real heroines and heroes of ABCD are the dancers that make you cry, laugh, and dance with them. DON'T MISS: The grand finale of the film and the number that follows in which Prabhu Deva, Ganesh Acharya and Remo shake a mean leg as credits scroll down in the end.

India's first-ever 3-D dance film is replete with robust routines that certainly vouch for director Remo D'Souza's undeniable proficiency as a choreographer. If only they also had the services of a functioning screenplay and not just been saddled with half-baked plot contrivances to hang their acts on, ABCD might have gone beyond just those first four letters of the alphabet. There is no denying that the film has its share of infectious energy and that the newcomers in the cast do go about their roles with commendable enthusiasm. It is the sluggish pace of the story-telling that prevents ABCD from rising to any great heights as an entertainer.

But the dancing is not spectacular. The dancers mostly look as if they've wandered off the many TV shows that revolve around similar themes. A few are given back stories but they are not interesting enough. Neither is the choreography. A couple of numbers are competent, but there's nothing heart-stopping or jaw-dropping.This film had the potential, but it needed both sharper direction and dancing, to maximize it.

A very bare-bones story-line, which seems unsurprisingly similar to the one in Hollywood’s ‘Step Up’, is just the feeble thread that knits together a vast array of dance sequences and styles. If you enjoy some cool, snazzy dance and can look past the largely decorative acting, this is actually a movie worth a watch. I give it a slightly generous 3 stars, largely because of the overwhelming positivity in the script and the loudly subtle happy-ending.

Dancer or no dancer, you are going to be entertained. Concepts have been shamelessly lifted from most of the foreign dance films. The usual underdog story but beautifully adapted to suit an Indian audience- both with story and dance forms. A seamless blend of dance picked up from the streets of Mumbai and the rehearsal halls of the west. There are so many awe inspiring pieces in the movie; it is difficult to pick a favorite. The best ones include the climax piece. If you are part of the public that is anyway hooked on to the dance reality shows on T.V., this is like a Diwali bonus. For the rest, it is still great entertainment. Verdict: Awe inspiring dance with a dose of emotion & drama.
